The 1968 SHELBY OPTIONS ?
There seems to be some confusion on 1968 Shelby options and how the cars were built.
Well, be confused no more. This page will help you identify how the cars were equipped.
First, let's talk about what an option is . . . an option is item placed on the car at the assembly plant.
An accessory is placed on a car, usually by the dealer, after the car is assembled.
1968 Shelbys are high optioned cars. These options were selected by Shelby before the car was built. Generally speaking
all cars are equipped the same. There are few exceptions to this "rule". Let's take a look at these options.
Rocker Panel Moldings
Standard on all 1968 Mustangs and Shelbys. I have seen a few early cars without the moldings, but this rare.
Wheel lip Moldings
Found on all 1968 Shelbys.
Locking Rear Axle
GT 350s and GT500s have open rear axles. Locking axles are found on most GT500 KRs, except the automatics with air conditioning.
Fold Down Seat
Found on all 1968 Shelby fastbacks.
Power Convertible Top
Found on all convertibles in either Black or White. The glass window was standard.
Locking Glove Box door
Found on all 1968 Shelbys. The glove box and trunk are keyed alike.
Power Disc Brakes (front)
Found on all 1968 Shelbys.
Power Steering
Found on all 1968 Shelbys.
Tilt Steering Column
Found on all cars built after December 8, 1967. Some very early cars do not have tilt columns.
This is the tilt mechanism.
Deluxe Steering Wheel
Woodgrain wheel was found on most cars. There were some cars that came through with standard (non-woodgrain) steering wheels.
Deluxe Interior (Decor Group)
All 1968 Shelbys received the deluxe interior with woodgrain dash. A deluxe, black seat belt was used regardless of interior color. This seat belt differs from the Mustang belt.
Remote LH Exterior Mirror
Found on all 1968 Shelbys.
Tachometer
All 1968 Shelbys got the 8000 rpm tachometer.
Clock
All 1968 Shelbys got a clock mounted in the dash.
AM Radio
All 1968 Shelbys got the AM radio. There were a handful of AM/8 tracks and AM/FM units; however, these are extremely rare.
The total number of cars without the AM radio is likely around a dozen.
Air Conditioning
About half the production run were cars with air conditioning. Most of these cars also have tinted glass.
Pop Open Fuel Cap
All 1968 Shelbys got the pop open caps.
Steel Wheels
1968 Shelbys recieved 5 steel wheels (size 15x6). The Shelby Club has only documented three cars leaving the factory with 10 spoke wheels.
Compared to the standard Mustang in 1968, these cars were loaded.
