The First GT500 KR
July 4, 2021
The lowest Shelby serial number for a GT500 KR is "2008". I was pleased to finally see pictures of the car appear on the internet. Just 1,571 KR models were built.
KR # 2008 was built during the last week of April, 1968. The car is Lime Green Metallic.
The build tag has an notation rarely seen on any car. It says "COBRA ENGINE". In addition, to a notation for a Mustang center console ("MC"). It is not likely that feature made it past AO Smith, even if it was installed by Ford.
The car has some great documentation and paperwork. The original build sheet also calls attention to the new 428 Cobra Jet engine. These types of notations often changed or disappeared completely.
The car has air conditioning and the automatic transmission. It appears to be nicely taken care of and mostly original.
It was originally sold by the greatest Shelby salesman of all time, Bill Kolb, at Gotham Ford in New York.
History and paperwork have always been a focus of the website. KR # 2008 passes all the tests and is a very nice example of a 1968 Shelby GT500 KR.
